The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational Happening now until March 6,2026

Often called The Eddie, the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational is one of the most prestigious surf contests in the world and one of the most uniquely Hawaiian. Held in honor of Eddie Aikau, a Native Hawaiian lifeguard and legendary waterman, the event celebrates a man who saved hundreds of lives as Waimea Bay’s first official lifeguard and became a lasting symbol of courage, selflessness, and aloha.

What makes The Eddie truly special is that it only runs under perfect conditions. Waves must reach 20 to 30 feet on the North Shore, with ideal swell direction, wind, and safety conditions. Because of this strict standard, the contest has been held only about a dozen times in more than 40 years. When it does run, the entire island pays attention, with locals, surfers, and visitors alike gathering to witness not just a competition, but a powerful expression of Hawai‘i’s deep respect for the ocean.
